RRT 83: Running Blogs

From the moment Johannes Gutenberg pieced together the first printing press in 1440, the printed word has been helping to educate, motivate and inspire fellow runners all over the world to live a better life.

From the early days of CompuServe, GEnie, BiX, Bulletin Board Systems and Usenet in the last decade of the 20th Century: the “Web Log” (Blog) has gone far past its original purpose of an “online diary”.  Today there are over 112 million blogs (tracked by the search engine Technorati) being updated by people all over the planet; giving Blog readers an interesting and entertaining perspective that old mass media could never approach.

On this 83rd episode of the Runners Round Table, we’re going to talk about Running Blogs: listing MANY examples and discussing why this media format is so important to both the running community network and others who are contemplating lacing up their shoes to join us on the road.

What makes a “Good” Running Blog?  Why is a Running Blog such a powerful method of motivating and inspiring others?  How and does audio and video media change the way that Running Blogs are consumed?  What are the barriers to entry for would be Running Bloggers?  What are the best online services for blogging? Why should YOU start a running blog?

Pull up a chair as we look for the answers to these questions and more, with Steve Runner (host of the Phedippidations podcast, and his Intervals blog) at the controls (pray for us) along with Adam "Boring Runner" from , Eddie Marathon and THE Zen Runner (to keep Steve in line).

Here's a link to a BUNCH of great Running Blogs!

RRT 82 - Reasons NOT To Run A Marathon

Open a running magazine, listen to a running podcast, read a running blog, and there it will be. The M word. On the May 19, 4pm EST episode, we'll discuss whether one can in fact lead a rich and fulfilling runner's life without racing a marathon. Must it be the grail, the sine qua non, the McGuffin?

The panel will consist of folks who have run marathons. They've walked the walk. We'll see if they can talk the talk. Some have asked whether there is something more, and declined to define "more" as "longer." Hosting will be Joe Garland, who wrote about the debate on the first of the year and posted this for the show. He'll be joined by GirlInMotion's Flo (whose recent Boston was her swan song in the event and who's debated the issue herself), Mark U. of Run In America fame, Matt of the DumpRunners Club, and Colin Hayes of the Resurrected Runner. Colin did a somewhat disappointing 3:49:32 on May 15 and Matt was disappointed with a 3:03:59, and we'll be speaking about both of those.

So if you feel resigned to having long been herded to the "has-only-run-a-half" table at social events, perhaps you'll discover that that's where the cool kids are.

RRT81 - Running to the Limits

We talked with freelance director, motivational speaker and cameraman, (AlexVero.co.uk), who made a bold new year's resolution in 2006 to leave the lad's life of drinking and smoking behind and  become a 2:20 marathoner in two years. He produced a video, “Running to the Limits” that documents his journey toward his goal. We talk about the root causes of Britain’s decline from having 100+ sub 2:20 runners in 1985 to just 5 in 2005, how to become really fast and what it means for Kenyans and Ethiopians to win big races.

You'll have to buy the video to find out if he made it! (here) and a portion of the profits will go to support a great charity to get shoes and healthcare to African young runners  http://www.shoe4africa.org/sendshoes.htm

Co-hosting are Paul (host of RunYankRun Podcast and runyankrun.blogspot.com), Lisa (nurseontherun.com)  and Toni (drusy.blogspot.com). In the chatroom we had Joe Garland (runwestchester.wordpress.com), Steve Runner (Phedippidations podcast), Trucker George, Margaret (@butterflyrunnr and Flutterbys blog), Matt (Dumprunners Club podcast) and Chris (@theTechGuyChris).

RRT 80 - How to stay out of the Medical Tent

Listen in as Mike (Westy's Running), Albert (Albert Runs), Lesley (Going the Extra Mile) and Steve (Phedippidations) talk about their race experiences and how to avoid ending up in the medical tent along with what happens if you do venture into the tent.

Albert discusses his recent race which resulted in him spending quite a few minutes in the medical tent and we hear about Steve's recent Boston marathon where he should have spent some time in the tent. We discuss the most common reason most folks have issues, hydration.

Some products that were discussed during the show were Succeed (S-Caps) and Hammer Endurolytes.

RRT79 - Coach Jackson

Adam Culp (CrazyFloridian blog) and Nicole (running bebe blog) talk with Coach Alphonzo Jackson, head coach of the San Francisco East Bay Run Team for Team-in-Training. He was the Head Coach of "Students Run Oakland" when the documentary film, "Runner's High" was made and has become sort of a celebrity coach since the film, and deservedly so. "Runner's High" follows a handful of Oakland High School students, many from poor backgrounds, as they train for their first marathons and gain self-discipline and self-confidence in the process. Coach Jackson has also been advising Team Point Two member, Nicole.

Coach Alphonzo also taped some Marathon Running Tips - 4 short films of about 2 minutes each - that are posted on the Runner's High website.

RRT 77 - Trails vs. Road Running

Listen in as Mike W (Westy's Running) is joined by EddieMarathon, Charlie Colpaert (Running with Coffee), Tim Doiron (RunDervRun), and Brian Walter (RushRunner) for episode 77 of the RunnersRoundTable. The topic: Trails vs. Road Running.

We tried to cover a variety of topics about trail running like getting started, pros and cons of trails, hazards of trails, surfaces and of course shoes. We may or may not have gotten through all of that but we all enjoyed our conversation, hopefully you will too.

I mentioned I would post a few links to some trail running resources these may help get you started but there are many more out there and don't forget to check your state, regional and national parks as they almost always have trails.

RRT 76 - Dreaming of Deliverance

On Wednesday April 7th the author of the novel Dreaming of Deliverance, Renee Chambliss, joined Joe Garland, Lesley and Toni to discuss the novel, writing, and, now and then, running. It was agreed that while Jane Eyre would like make a good ultra-marathoner (lots of stamina), Elizabeth Bennett would do quite well at shorter stuff. Renee explained how she used a Spiderman tent as her recording studio for the podiocast of the novel, and she promised to resume recording now that she's back from a surfing photo safari in Tasmania Tanzania. She's promising a sequel.

For her part, Lesley admitted that starting out as a runner and going first to the marathon was a mistake; she's quite happy doing much shorter stuff in a local race series where she lives in North Carolina. Toni was enjoying a respite from the London weather in Florida.

Couple of updates. Little Nell (and you'll have to listen to the program to see how she came up) is from Dickens's "The Old Curiosity Shop." The classic prison-runner movie, "The Jericho Mile," is from 1979:

RRT 75 - irun iread book club

Joe Garland and Toni Harvey spoke with Canadians Grant and Vicky, who have created the "irun iread" book club for iRun magazine's website. We started with a discussion about barefoot running and Chris McDougall's book, Born to Run. Joe's review of it is here, and McDougall's RRT appearance, episode 43, is here. (Was Joe too harsh? The interview to which he referred is on Pete Magill's site.) Joe mentioned a five-part Science of Sport series on barefoot running: parts one, two, three, four, and five. There was some discussion about why women make better ultra-marathoners. Decon Patrick Jones (braininjurychaplain.com) shared his barefoot/minimalist running experience as it relates to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). And Joe made a reference to a recent study on exercise and weight, and to this article from the Daily Beast.

In the chatroom we had Adam (Confessions of a Medical Scholar blog), Craig McFarlane, Mark U's (Run In America blog) and 9 guests.

Here are some other running-related books we mentioned:
Running for my Life - Ray Zahab, Terry Fox: His Story - Leslie Scrivener, Pre- Tom Jordan, George Sheehan (many!), Once A Runner John L. Parker Jr., The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner - Alan Sillitoe, Lore of Running - Timothy Noakes, Flanagan's Run - Tom McNab, What I Talk about When I Talk about Running - Haruki Murakami and The Perfect Mile- Neal Bascomb.

On his blog, Joe reviewed Charlie Spedding's "From Last to First" as well as Renee Chambliss's "Dreaming of Deliverance" and Jamie Freveletti's "Running from the Devil," both novels about women who find running long distances rather, well, useful. Renne will be the subject of next week's RRT program.

Many of these can be found at Audible.com, and Mark U alsos recommends his list at astore.amazon.com/runi-20.

RRT 71 - Joe Henderson Interview

Listen to Mike (Westy's Running), Albert (Albert Runs) and Lesley (Going the Extra Mile) as they welcome Joe Henderson, the former chief editor of Runner's World Magazine. Joe is a prolific author of over 2 dozen books on running (Amazon has 4 pages including his book on George Sheehan, Did I win?) RRT 64: Running as you get older

Toni (53) from www.drusy.blogspot.com and Joe Garland (53) www.RunWestchester.wordpress.com talked with with Judge Mike Harris (63) www.mikeharris.org and Tom Scriven (77) about running as you get 0lder.

Mike blogs on overall fitness, weight training and mental blocks to getting fit in Michigan. He views running as one leg of the three legged stool of wellness - along with diet and weight-training. Mike runs every day with his dog, though not long distances. We talk about the myth about running for weight-loss. Mike was a winner of the Body for Life championship in 2006!

Tom lives in Devon, started running at 55 and and stopped counting after completing over 100 marathons! He ran his first ultra in 1997, and has run eleven 24-hour races. In a German 6-day Ultra-track event in 2007, he completed ten Marathons plus 10K, total of 268 miles, but in attempting to run 12 Marathons in six days in 2008, he only ran 8, during which he tore his right knee cartilage and since then, following keyhole knee surgery plus a few other medical problems, hasn't run for over 12 months. He prescribes Vitamin G (Guiness beer)!

In the chatroom we had Charlie (www.cewtwo.com) Lesley (www.runlesleyrun.blogspot.com), John Ellis (www.the22miler.blogspot.com), Kiltrunner, Barb from her Kelownagurl Tris Podcast, Steve Runner from the Phedippidations podcast, Iain (www.devoniain.blogspot.com), Dennis (www.trainingandtannins.com), Matt from the Dumprunners Club podcast, and Lybbe from the 50 Counting Down podcast.
